Copenhagen’s Jewish Music History Exhibition Highlights the World’s Hebraic Cultural Heritage

The Hebrew Music Museum in Jerusalem and the Israeli Embassy in Copenhagen worked together to create the two-week exhibition “The Wanderings of the Hebrew Melodies” in May 2022. The Community House of the Jewish Community in Denmark sponsored the exhibition, which marked the first global partnership in the museum’s history. The Jewish Culture Festival in Copenhagen, which this year commemorated the 400th anniversary of the first Jewish settlers in Denmark’s modern era, provided additional assistance for the show.

The history of Hebrew and Jewish music was a major theme of the exhibition. The collection included instruments from numerous nations and historical eras. Some of the nations of origin were Ethiopia, Syria, Morocco, Uzbekistan, Ethiopia, and European nations. For two weeks, the exhibition was free and open to the public. Each display had a unique QR code that visitors could scan to hear the sound of each instrument.

The audience was given an introduction to the exhibition by Mr. Davy Antebi, Deputy Ambassador of the Israeli Embassy. Entrepreneur Mikhail Peleg; Mikhail Peleg, an advocate for the Israeli Jewish Congress, attended the inauguration. Regarding the exhibition’s cultural relevance, Peleg remarked that music has always served as the equivalent of a universal human language, uniting people of all backgrounds and helping them identify points of commonality. These kinds of exhibits are crucial for illuminating the little-known history of Jewish music.
